Natural Acne Scar Treatment continued…
Natural acne scar treatments receive mixed reactions from all those in the medical field. Some recognize the benefits of natural acne scar treatments while others approach it with a sceptical eye, claiming they only work as placebos. My best piece of advice for everyone seeking to treat acne scars would be to use them predominantly as a supplementary treatment, using the good ones to bolster your recovery from acne scars.
I have made my list below of natural acne scar treatments that are commonly used by acne sufferers. I will give my observations on each of these methods, leaving my recommendations and an honest perspective on whether they work or not. First, we start with some basic methods that are always overlooked :

a) Drinking lots of water
Although this sounds so generic and unoriginal, it is nevertheless incredibly important. This is the most basic of natural acne scar treatments and yet one most people ignore. Since the removal of excess water is an integral component of the way your body cleanses itself, drinking sufficient water ensures all the detoxification facilities of your body are in tip top condition. When your body is hydrated, dead skin and scar cells are shed off easier and new skin grows easier.
Remember your skin is made out of around 70% water. Some experts actually believe that this is the best natural way to treat acne scars. My verdict? Regardless of which methods below you employ, DO NOT miss this step. Drink around 2 litres of water daily, at regular intervals since drinking it all at once has little benefit.
b) Eat bright coloured fruits and vegetables.
Fruits and vegetables contain lots of vitamins and minerals that support healthy skin growth. The bonus benefit of fruits and vegetables are the anti-oxidants that they carry with them. These help to destroy the free-radical particles in your body that ravage your skin. Anti-oxidant rich fruits and veges can be easily identified by their bright, bold colours. Eat lots of bright coloured fruits such as blueberries (an excellent source), strawberries, cherries and for vegetables, eat variants like eggplant and leafy chinese vegetables. Not to be missed since this is one natural acne scar treatment that requires only a slight diet modification.
c) Rosehip Seed Oil
This is a substance that has been scientifically proven to work in reducing scars, wrinkles and firming up skin. It is widely used in commercial cosmetics that claim to have anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, burn treating or skin repair properties. To apply this treatment, purchase some roseship seed oil from your local pharmacy or store and apply a small amount directly to scar areas twice daily. Avoid using continuosly over a period of 2 months. Do not continue use if you react adversely towards the smell.
d) Aloe Vera Gel
Another remedy that works really well for skin burns and scars, aloe vera gels can yield great results for acne scars too. Honestly, this is my favourite natural acne scar treatment. Applying pure aloe vera gels directly to scars tends to yield better results than consumption of aloe vera drinks. The sap from the aloe vera plant has a very bitter taste and needs to be processed with plenty of sugar and water, hence diluting its effect when consumed as drinks. Read the instructions for the gel products before applying. A recommended dosage tends to be twice a day, spaced evenly apart. This is one of my favourite techniques, because aloe vera gel has a very faint pleasant smell and has a smooth texture.
e) Tomato treatment
While eating tomatoes has its own merits, it can also be applied directly onto skin for rejuvenative purposes. Tomatoes contain lycopene which is one of the strongest natural antioxidants around. It also contains Vitamin A which is useful in slowing down the production of sebum in skin. Cut a small slice of tomato daily and leave onto skin for about 5 minutes to gradually reduce scars over time. Using this treatment is a matter of personal preference since some people dislike the feel of tomato flesh on their skin while others tend not to mind it.
f) Sandalwood and rose water
This method involves making a paste of sandalwood and rose water for direct face application. Apply the paste directly onto skin and leave it overnight. Wash it off your face in the morning with cold water. Do this twice a week for best results. As this method is a bit cumbersome, some people skip it altogether. However there have been cases of very quick recovery from acne scars using this method.

g) Lather with lavender oil
Another oil with strong skin rejuvenative properties is lavender oil. It is commonly used in cosmetic products, mainly for its fragrance however. Apply a small amount of pure lavender oil on your skin directly and massage gently into skin. Some people prefer instead to combine the oil with some water and use it as a face wash/splash instead. Do this once or twice a day but discontinue if you react adversely to the scent of it.
h) Make a Multani Mitti paste
Multani Mitti, also known as Fuller’s earth is a powderlike substance made from clay extracts that is popularly used in face masks. You can buy it from your local Asian grocer or you can occasionally find it at supermarkets. Combine garlic cloves, carrot juice and some Multani Mitti powder and make into a paste. Apply it to scar areas for 20 minutes each day and wash off once finished. A word of caution – do not use this if you have very dry or sensitive skin since Multani Mitti powder does have strong absorptive properties.
Although there are other alternative methods that suggest the use of honey, rubbing of ice cubes and olive oil, I have chosen not to list them here because they return unsubstantial results in helping to treat acne scars. In conclusion I would like to stress that the methods listed in part 1 of this series are the more recognized methods of scar removal and have more reproducible results. However, feel free to try these natural methods listed above first, if you find those methods more costly or risky. Remember that natural acne scar treatments are not magic cures, they do take time to work, and they also rely heavily on you maintaining a healthy diet and good basic nutritional practices.
