Getting Rid of Pimples (Part 1)

There’s nothing worse than waking up in the morning to the sight of a pimple on your face! It’s probably your experience that pimples seem to have a mind of their own, often appearing at the worst possible times – just before a big party, on the eve of your wedding day or before that big date.

Getting rid of pimples is not something that concerns only teenagers, but is often something adults struggle with as well.

In order to eliminate a pimple, it is necessary to first understand what causes it. Your skin has tiny pores or follicles that release sebum onto the top layer of your skin. It also functions to allow dead skin cells from your dermis layer to migrate to the top for removal.

A pimple therefore is simply an inflammation in the skin caused by the clogging of a pore. There are many reasons your pores may be blocked, such as when dirt is trapped in the pores, or if the dead skin cells get mixed up with the sebum and form a blockage.

The bacteria Propionibacterium is what’s responsible for the infection and redness that accompanies pimple. It is generally harmless but when settled on the right skin conditions, it inflames the skin of the victim and causes a mild infection.

Now that you’ve had your basic dermatological lesson, its time to explore the best way of getting rid of pimples. This article focuses on those pimples that pop up occasionally. These are generally less serious and can be easily removed without requiring any medication.  If you follow the steps outlined below, getting rid of pimples will be a breeze.

Recognize a mature pimple

Prematurely popping a pimple poses a risk that you may drive the infection further down the pore and not release the blockage. Furthermore, this may introduce permanent skin scarring which is significantly harder to remove. You can identify pimples that are right for pricking as they have yellow pus you can see nearly breaking through the layer of skin. Working only on these pimples ensures you minimize the risk of cross infection and that it won’t hurt when you prick it. Leave the premature ones alone.

Prepare the necessary “equipment”

Getting rid of pimples should be treated like performing minor surgery – you need the right equipment before you begin! Rest assured though, as nothing too elaborate is required. All you need before you begin is some rubbing alcohol, a few pads of clean gauze, a pricking needle (a clean sewing needle is fine too) and some warm water handy. Some people prefer to burst the pimple with their hands, but this can get rather messy and increase the risk of infection.

Ensure your hands and face are clean

Thoroughly wash your hands before you begin. Use some anti-bacterial soap (or normal soap if you have none) and ensure you rinse and dry your hands well. Carefully wash your face with a mild facial wash before you begin too. Sterilize the needle by cleaning with the rubbing alcohol – this is a vital step in getting rid of pimples.

Gently prick the pimple

There is no need to prick the pimple too deeply, just enough to pierce through the layer of skin. Not much force is required either, just give it a gentle prick and you’re in business. Once that’s done, use both your index fingers to squeeze from opposite ends so the pus is removed from the pore. You’ll need to do this a few times until a clear liquid is extracted. If a  blood starts to be discharged, that’s an indication that its time to move on to the next step.

Sanitize the area around the pimple

Once you’re done popping the pimple, soak some gauze with the rubbing alcohol and gently wipe the affected area. This will clean the area of any blood or fluids while also ensuring that any bacteria is killed. It is an important step to prevent an infection on the wound. To seal off the exposed skin, place a plastic band-aid (don’t use the cloth variant as the adhesives are much stronger!) over the pimple. You’ve probably realized this already, but you probably don’t want to do this if you’re planning on attending any social events immediately after!

If you do have to attend an important event, you could opt for a concealer cream to use over the popped pimple. Ensure that it is anti-bacterial or one that also acts as pimple cream.

Now that you’re well versed in getting rid of pimples, you will find out in the next section how to stack the odds in your favour of preventing breakouts of these pimple. As they say, prevention is better than a cure, and there is no better place this is shown to be true than in caring for your skin
