Many believe genetics play a big part in whether you will suffer from acne. According to research, if both parents suffered acne, there is a 75% likelihood that the child will suffer from it too. If 1 parent had acne, the chances drop to 25%. Of all acne cases, thankfully only 20% are categorized as severe.

Acne is primarily driven by the hormones in your body, which is why as a teenager, you tend to experience acne more compared to when you become older. However, it isn’t always necessarily age related, some people have strong hormonal activity right through their adulthood and find they also experience acne later on in life.

Acne tends to also be more prevalent in someone who has skin that produces large amounts of sebum, which causes dirt and skin particles to be trapped on the skin. This sometimes clogs pores and develop into blackheads, whiteheads or pimples. A big factor that is overlooked is also the contribution of diet in the formation of acne vulgaris.

Astonishingly, the occurence of acne is almost double in developed nations compared to that of less developed countries. Experts believe this is due to the poor dietary intake and consumption of sugary and highly processed foods. Regardless of how bad your acne is, or how impossible you think your situation may be, let me give you the honest truth up front – there are great acne vulgaris treatment available! It is not something you need to live with for the rest of your life.

This site is packed full with useful information on acne-ridding tips and techniques. But first, here are the basic steps that everyone hoping to be cured from acne must take:

1. Accept yourself and stop stressing!

Accepting yourself is always the first thing to do. You are the best you that you can be, and acne doesn’t change that! Sometimes, it is easier to wallow in despair because of acne, rather than pick yourself up to find a solution. Negative thoughts and behaviours can have a terrible effect on your self-esteem or confidence. That’s why I’m glad you’ve found this page, it shows that you are ready to be positive about it and more importantly, take action. Consider fighting acne as a challenge for yourself, use the right guide map and I assure you – you will see positive results in the end.

2. Upgrade your cleansing practices into habits

A rigorous cleansing regime, constantly drinking lots of water, face masks, acne creams are excellent! Problem is, after doing them for a while,  you may start to get tired of it all. Here’s some encouagement – don’t give up, keep doing your best and soon your routines will develop into habits, you have nothing to lose and all to gain. I give you detailed steps on how to deal with specific acne problems, but all that counts for nothing is no action is taken, and maintained. Here’s a tip – regardless of what acne vulgaris treatment you use, the key is having the discipline to keep repeating it and developing it into routine, be it antibiotics, creams, washes, etc.

3. Start with low concentration treatments

Depending on your sensitivity towards these substances, a 5% benzoyl peroxide or salicylic cream/solution may be your first point of call. Remember, these are only temporary remedies, but quite good ones nonetheless. They are readily available from your local pharmacy and are relatively inexpensive. Follow the instructions on the package carefully and discontinue use if you notice any allergies. Remember, these creams help to deal with only the symptoms of acne, but not necessarily the root causes of acne.Acne is often a way of telling your body that there is an imbalance somewhere in your body.

4. Maintain good skin hygiene

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen acne that could have been prevented just by following simple hygiene rules. After rigorous exercise, ensure you take a shower and change into clean clothes. Sweaty clothing or towels are breeding grounds for the bacteria that cause inflammation of skin, P. Acnes (where acne got its name from).

Establish a regime of washing your face daily with a gentle cleanser to rid your skin of excess sebum, grime and dead skin cells. A weekly exfoliate will also help to strip of layers of dead flaky skin that can also block pores. A note of warning : do not use exfoliates if you are diagnosed with sensitive skin, since your skin may be slightly thinner than average skin.

5. Eat your way to healthy skin.

Avoid excess consumption of high sugar foods, processed foods or anything that has been excessively fried. This is the single most prevalent stumbling block for people trying to free themselves from acne. Skipping this step will set-back any acne vulgaris treatment you employ and may hinder progress. Drink lots of water daily, 2 litres at least and have large intakes of fruits and vegetables, prefarably less sweet variants. Everytime you feel like popping Double Choc mud cake into your mouth, think of the consequences you are risking with your skin.

6. See a dermatologist if necessary

I will be honest by saying that sometimes, in extreme cases of acne (the 20% of people I mentioned earlier), seeing your dermatologist is a necessary as a step towards recovery. They may prescribe antibiotics or isotretinoin (accutane) for severe cases of acne. The downside to this of course, is that these treatments are not usually affordable, and are mostly overkill for your condition anyway. Rarely do I see dermatologists not prescribe a form of medication when you step into their clinic. Weigh up all suggestions first before deciding.
