With that, rest assured that this site is going to be around for quite some time and will continue to be here until you finally find the cure for acne you’ve always wanted.
First of all, I thought it would be useful for everyone reading to understand what acne really is, and how it is formed. In the training of my profession, I am taught that to first solve a problem, you must start by understanding the cause the problem. Fighting acne is no different.
In a nutshell, acne is caused primarily by the blocking of pores or hair follicles in your skin. It can take many common forms such as pimples, whiteheads, blackheads and also large cystlike masses that are sometimes hard to the touch.
Since it is a condition that is solely associated with skin, it helps to have an appreciation of basic skin anatomy. Your skin has an outer layer called the epidermis which is the part of skin that you can see. You might not know this, but every inch of skin you see is made of dead skin cells! Not only that, humans shed 40, 000 dead cells every minute, or over 60 million cells in a day. Beneath the epidermis is the dermis layer, which is around 10 times as thick as the outer layer. This is the control center of skin, if you like, and has sweat glands as well as sebum glands. Sebum is that oily substance on your face that makes it go shiny, but more importantly, helps to keep your skin water proof! Finding the cure for acne hinges upon your understanding of this process.

Sweat, sebum and dead skin cells travel up through these glands/ducts and together form a protective layer on your skin surface. At some point of time, depending on the sequence of events, blockages of pores, bacterial infection or inflammation of skin cells can result in different lesions in your skin. These appear as bumps, rash like appearances, and nodules or what we very commonly call pimples, blackheads or whiteheads.
As you probably already know, acne appears on your face, upper back, shoulder or upper chest. The reason for this is because these areas of your body contain more sebaceous follicles (more oil producing follicles) than any other part, making them more susceptible to acne breakouts.
There are several factors that cause and contribute to acne formation, they are:
A) Excessive division of cells in follicles
The search for the cure for acne starts at the cell level. Many scientists believe that this is the initial trigger point of acne but cannot accurately determine the reasons for it. There are many explanations for this, and hormonal reactions is one of them. The problem with this is, well, when too many cells are rushing through the same narrow passage (your glands), this can only mean one thing – a jam-up.
B) Excessive sebum
This commonly occurs in teenagers who hit puberty, thus kicking hormone production levels through the roof. It triggers an excessive production of sebum in skin which in turn gives fertile ground for acne vulgaris (the most commons acne type) to form. Yet this condition is not something exclusively reserved for teens, adults have the problem of excessive sebum too, but is triggered by other things such as lifestyle habits and diet choices. For teenagers, often the best cure for acne is to ensure excess sebum is washed away regularly.
C) Presence of Bacteria
A specific bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes or P.acnes for short, is found in the different type of lesions discussed before. The bacteria itself may not be of much threat, but it feeds on fatty acids and the sebum that is found in skin. The presence of this bacteria however, relates to the fourth point below. Many cures for acne focus on eliminating this bacteria altogether
D) Inflammation of skin tissue
As a natural mechanism of fighting bacteria, your body will introduce inflammation around an infected site and send white blood cells or lymphocytes to eliminate the offender. The problem is, it is not a happy story for your physical appearances. The blockage to the pore is forced to flare outward and your skin becomes sore, painful to the touch and unsightly.
As you can see, finding the cure for acne is not as simple a problem as medicine manufacturers would have you believe. While creams, pills and other forms of meds certainly help target specific areas, they fail to give you a complete view on how acne can be treated in the long term.
